Which Browser? Right now, Firefox does better. Firefox seems to render sharper images than Chrome or Edge. That's not always been the case, and may yet change. But for today, I recommend Firefox.

Videos. Many galleries include two copies of videos -- "native" SmugMug versions -- the ones in-line in the galleries -- and embedded Vimeo versions -- the ones at the end of the gallery. But show well. The Vimeo ones can look a just little sharper and play a little smoother than the SmugMug ones. These are embedded from my Vimeo site and use their player.

Downloading pictures. You are welcome to download my pictures from any gallery that shows a Creative Commons logo in the sidebar (up top for mobile devices). Most galleries have this. Use is subject to the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 license. Personal or educational use is fine. And if you want a photo from a gallery that doesn't show the logo, drop me a note.

If you repost one my pictures or otherwise share with others, I (and the license) ask you give me credit, provide a link back to the source, and cite the license with its link. This can be as simple as "Photo: Jim Ringland (CC BY-NC 4.0)", with my name linked to the gallery the picture came from and the CC part linked to the Creative Commons page. That tells the next person that they too can use the image for personal or educational uses as long as they acknowledge it's my original.

No commercial use please. Commercial use is anything that involves you or your organization making money: sales, building commercial image, AdSense on your site, non-profit fund-raising, etc. (But if you represent a non-profit, contact me.)

To download a full resolution picture from a desktop computer, click on the image to enter the lightbox. There's a download "down arrow" on the sidebar menu at the left. On a phone or smaller tablet, a long press on a gallery image will bring up a download option. No need to enter the lightbox.

The way-cool go-to guy for hot information.

Plant Genera, Linked to the Appropriate Family

The Plant Families Folder collects botanical pictures from the various hiking and touring galleries.  They are organized by family, the next major taxonomic division above genus.  The list below gives the genera represented, with links to the appropriate family.  So, for example, Abies links to the family gallery for PinaceaeAbies are the fir trees.  Pinaceae is the pine family, including (in California) fir, spruce, pine, hemlock, and Douglas fir.
