Monday, May 28. We drove up to the Quaking Aspen Campground, about 45 minutes beyond Camp Nelson.
The lower portion of our campsite.
Viola adunca (dog violet) in a meadow near camp.
After dinner we took a short walk through the Ponderosa pine and white fir forest.
Tuesday, May 29. The Lewis Camp trailhead parking lot had three cars, no people, and lots of equipment for horsemen.
There was a map at the trailhead. Around Trout Meadow, this does NOT match the trail layout on current maps.
The trailhead itself.
Me, as taken by Alex near the trailhead.
About ten minutes down the trail, we hit the wilderness boundary.
Ceanothus on the side of the trail.
Much of the hiking here was through open pine forest.
A long view north to Farewell Gap area. Mineral King is just beyond.
Sarcodes sanguinea. There was lots of snow plant below the pines. And one was graced by this swallowtail.
We planned to go to Trout Meadow today, but missed a turn an headed to Grey Meadow instead. This is Fish Creek.
Fish Creek lived up to its name ... but the Wilderness did not. This is a rainbow, not a golden, trout.
We had lunch after crossing the creek in the shade next to this nice campsite.
Sidalcea oregana. Sure on the genus, moderately sure on the species. Mallow on the way to Grey Meadow.
Calochortus minimus. Sierra mariposa.
The cow camp at Grey Meadow. Note the TV antenna.
