For comparison, this is what signs looked like when I was here in 2009. This one was at the old trail junction by the stream from Papoose to LotLI. Greener then too.

Silver Pass seems to be aligned just right to get cloud rainbow effects. I saw something like this in 2009 too.

Chief Lake. Silver Pass is right up that steep bank at the left. The trail goes over the mountain off-picture to the left to avoid cliffs.

I followed the JMT up almost to Silver Pass and then turned east toward Warrior Lake. It's only about 1/4 mile off the trail, 200' down. Rock-free bed sites were hard to find though. I ended up camping on a flat below the lip of the lake far left.

Just up little rise, though, was a beautiful shoreline and view.

After setting up, I walked to Silver Pass. This is the approach to the high point.

The Silver Divide High Point is well above the pass -- the watershed divide -- which is this saddle 200' down. To the right of dry pond bed is the steep bank down to Chief Lake.

Epilobium obcordatum (rock fringe). Really nice to see a spot of bright color in this otherwise drab landscape.

Polygonum shastense (Shasta knotweed). A very tough blooming semi-shrub up here is the sandy rock flats.

From camp, I could look down to Squaw Lake. I searched for a workable cross-country route down for tomorrow, but I never saw a route I was sure was safe and clear.
