June 18 - 26, 2017. Farther Afield. With many high country backpacking areas still partially covered by snow and guarded by high water at stream crossings, I opted for a car camping trip to three dry and mostly snow-free Great Basin ranges east of the Sierras: the Panamint, White, and Inyo Mountains. The first forms the west flank of Death Valley. The latter two form the east wall of the Owens Valley. I also spent some time in the Owens Valley itself and made short visits to some of the other valleys adjacent to these ranges. This was an opportunity to see sights representing both natural and human history that I'd never get to backpacking.
