Thursday, July 2. Driving Up: Whiskeytown Reservoir.
I was on the trail from the Swift Creek Trailhead by around 3. Today's short hike was through a forest of ponderosa pines and Douglas firs.
The trail follows Swift Creek. It is swift. And big.
Lilium rubescens. Redwood lily, aka chaparral lily. Interesting, if scattered flowers, in this forest.
Lilium pardalinum ssp. shastense (Shasta lily) ... maybe. It grows here and the two-toned petal markings are right. Stamens certainly shorter than L. pardalinum ssp. pardalinum. Could be L. kelleyanum but markings not quite right.
Darlingtonia californica. California pitcher plant. More exotic things around the Preacher Meadow Research Natural Area.
Cypripedium californicum (California lady's slipper orchid). This is the first time I've seen a lady's slipper in the West.
