Lasthenia californica (goldfields) on the drive in, Sunday, April 15. This view is at about 2000' on Plum Creek Road.
Most of the area was just grass, with oaks and grey pines above.
A few miles on I turned onto unpaved Ponderosa Way. The crossing of the North Fork of Antelope Creek.
Ponderosa Way tops out at 4000', in the Ponderosa and Sugar pines. Good road here, but it got much rougher on the descent to Mill Creek.
There was just a little bit of snow under the trees.
About half way down into the Mill Creek canyon, Black Rock came into view.
Plagiobothrys sp. Popcorn flower up close.
I arrived at camp just as several other groups were leaving. These are the last people I'll see for 3 days!
My campsite (taken the next morning).
The view up from camp.
Mill Creek near camp.
After setting up, I walked up the road. This looks rough but it was worse higher up.
The Mill Creek Bridge, looking south.
There were a bunch of signs just past the bridge. I went up about a mile.
Mimulus kelloggii (Kellogg's monkeyflower) on the verge.
Fritillaria recurva. Scarlet fritillary. I've only seen this a few times.
Then back to the bridge, where I got this view upstream.
After dinner I explored more and found this 6' cascade and pool just above the bridge.
My campsite at dusk.
