Asteraceae (Compositae) - Asteroideae/Asterodae
Part of the sunflower family (Asteroideae subfamily, Asterodae super-tribe). For complex groups like the composites, botanists have inserted a variety of intermediate levels between family and genus: subfamily, super-tribe (used rarely), tribe, and sub-tribe. I've opted to break composites to the subfamily and super-tribe level. This group has asters and other daisies plus things like yarrows and goldenrods with lots and lots of small composite flowers clustered together. Next Asteraceae gallery.
And as an aside, I am amused that the word asteroid and the subfamily name Asteroideae come from the same roots. Aster comes from the Greek word for "star". The same root fits the word Astronony. Both -oid and -oideae also derive from a common Greek root (with intermediate steps through Latin) meaning "resembling". So both the heavenly body and the subfamily resemble stars (or star-like flowers).
