Aralia californica (elk's clover) on the Mt. Wittenberg Trail heading up from Bear Valley. Those leaflets are as much as a foot long and the whole compound leaf, two feet or more. It's a giant herbaceous plant, at most semi-woody, not a tree. It lives in the forest understory.
