Mt Diablo: Mitchell Cyn and Eagle Peak - Nov 22 2015
SF Bay Area.
Bay Area 2015.
Up Mitchell Canyon to Deer Flat, over to Murchio Gap, then back down via Eagle Peak. All of the pictures are from Mitchell Canyon or right at the beginning of the climb out of it to Deer Flat.
Stipa pulchera (purple needle grass, formerly Nasalla pulchera) at the Mitchell Canyon trailhead. The dry stalks about a bit over 3' tall. The California state grass.
Vitis californica (California wild grape) was in full color today.
The orange-leaved tree is a California black oak. I don't recall what the yellow one was. Perhaps an alder. The evergreen trees here are bays, but there were live oaks in the mix too. Now what was that about wild California having no fall color??
Pellaea andromedifolia (coffee fern). Unlike the ones at Las Trampas a few weeks ago, these are still green. (A few monkeyflower sprouts complete the scene.)
Pentagramma triangularis (gold back fern). A bit more characteristic than the fading ones I photographed at Huckleberry eighteen days ago.
