Starting out on the Juniper Trail. The 800' climb from here to the summit area mixes oak/bay woodland and chaparral (with a few open areas). Most of the flowers here were on the woody or at least semi-woody things.

Clematis lasiantha (chaparral clematis). I saw flowers in March (here on Mt. Diablo and on my Big Sur trip). Today, it's time for seed pods.

Adenostoma fasciculatum (chamise) was coming into bloom. This plant was a bit farther along than many.

Lepechinia calycina (pitcher sage). Some flowers, some seed pods.

Monardella villosa (coyote mint). On to the semi-woody things.

Eriophyllum lanatum var. arachnoideum (woolly sunflower). On the line between herbaceous and semi-woody. Lots of this here and all around the upper reaches of the mountain.

Delphinium californicum (coast larkspur), the non-woody entry here. The hairy stem suggests this is an intermediate between ssp. interus and californicum. I saw many of these on the Juniper Trail and elsewhere today, but most had finished blooming.

The Mary Bowerman Trail. Now we pick up the herbaceous flowers.

Phacelia nemoralis (shade phacelia). Not much bloom left and it's hard to identify the species from just this.

Phacelia nemoralis (shade phacelia) leaves: ovate and hairy. Stiff hairs on the stems too. The species identification is through these parts more so than the flowers. For me, today's new species #2.

Calochortus pulchellus (Mt. Diablo globe lily). I got to see the very beginning of the globe lily bloom on my March visit just before the park roads closed. And with the park reopening, I got to see the end today! CNPS 1B, but common on the mountain -- I saw them in many places today -- just almost nowhere else.

Clarkia concinna (red ribbons). Swaths of these up here ... but the first I've seen in the wilds this year. Some PO in the mix too. (C. unguicularis was out in the area too, in sunnier spots, but I've shot those enough this year.)

Collinsia tinctoria (tincture plant). I saw these here and on the Bald Mtn. trail, but got the better picture here. In the East Bay, these grow only on Mt. Diablo.

Around the corner at the overlook is all this viewing equipment. The shrubs with the white seed heads are the familiar goldenbush (Ericameria linearifolia).

Papaver heterophyllum (wind poppy). On the east-facing side of the loop now.

Campanula exigua (chaparral bellflower). This is a CNPS 1B, but it seems to be a reliable find up here in June.

Lewisia rediviva (bitter root). I didn't see any in bloom today: certainly nothing to match that wonderful May 2018 trip up here. The best I could do was find a few in bud. These are just above Devil's Pulpit.

Eriogonum umbellatum var. bahiiforme (sulphur buckwheat) near Devil's Pulpit. CNPS lists the variety (not the species) as 4.2 (limited distribution).
