Ventana: Turner Creek to Big Pines - April 2019
April 16-18, 2019. California Coast Range. This backpacking trip was a chance to see some of the areas hardest hit by the 2016 Soberanes Fire (and then only in early recovery from the 2008 Basin Fire). Access is still limited. The road to Bottcher's Gap is closed part way up. I parked at "The Hoist" and hiked in via Long Ridge Road and the Turner Creek Trail.
Then on to Comings Camp where I spent two nights. The layover day hike took in Big Pines Camp, Pat Springs, and a walk down the Pine Creek Trail to Pine Creek Camp. Then out the way I came on the 18th. Much was interesting but a little grim. Comparisons with galleries from the past visits to the area in 2006 and 2012, especially the former, make it clear how much has been lost to fire. Yes, the regrowth has begun -- again -- but a mature forest is a long ways away, and a mature ponderosa pine forest farther still, it at all.
Read MoreIt still "feels" forested but it's a mix: some fully healthy trees, some struggling (like that madrone), and some dead skeletons. It looks worse than it is: there will be more cover when the black oaks leaf out fully. The rampantly energized understory -- mostly ceanothus, blackberries, and PO -- sometimes obscured the trail.
