Clarkia unguicularis (elegant Clarkia). Given these were mostly shot up on the Mary Bowerman Trail three weeks ago, I was surprised to see a good stand of these not far in from the trailhead.

Clarkia affinis (chaparral Clarkia). Note the fuzed sepals: no question on the species identification here. These were definitely getting dry and woody but still had some some bloom left in them.

Clarkia rubicunda (ruby chalice Clarkia) rounds out today's Clarkias. Many of these, but all far in from the trailhead. These are always the last Clarkias to bloom, so no surprise seeing them.

Eschscholzia supercalifragilisticexpirubicunda (Mary Poppins' poppy) would have been my call, except that Jepson doesn't list it for the area. The poppy and the Clarkia tucked themselves together like this without any help on my part.

Holodiscus discolor (ocean spray). A little late for these, but not too much so ... and I only saw a few.

Heteromeles arbutifolia (Christmas berry), also at the end of their bloom, but early summer is by no means out of line for these to be in bloom.

Zeltnera muehlenbergii (Muehlenberg's centaury, native) is my best guess because I don't see much of pedicel on the flowers. Centaurium tenuiflorum (slender centuary; non-native) and Zeltnera davyi (Davy's centaury, native) are also possible. The differences live in details that are not all that clear on these photos.

Helminthotheca echioides (bristly ox-tongue). An invasive non-native and plenty common out here. These closed up in early afternoon.

Antirrhinum vexillocalyculatum (wiry snapdragon). When I first posted this gallery, I identified this as Trichostema lanceolatum (Vinegarweed), with a note that it seemed a little early for them. Well, it was.

Artemisia douglasiana (California mugwort). Right in the middle of its bloom period.
