A weekend at the Ahwahnee - Nov 2019
November 8-11, 2019. Yosemite. A celebration of my 65th birthday. What better a place to enter senior citizenhood than in Yosemite Valley at the historic, elegant, and pricey Ahwahnee Hotel ... especially after a rather non-senior-citizenly summer with two 50 mile backpacking trips in the park! Karen and I drove up on the 8th and spent the next two days exploring together. Up to Glacier Point on the 9th, followed by guided nature walk near the Ahwahnee in mid-afternoon. A little walking around the hotel and river on the morning of the 10th followed by a ranger walk from the Visitor's Center through Cook's Meadow in the afternoon. Home on the 11th. Between these more organized events (and between meals in the beautiful Ahwahnee dining room) I took many short and not so short walks from the hotel.
One thing we very much noticed on this trip: the increased visitor levels and traffic. On this long Veteran's Day weekend, both Saturday and Sunday saw a fair amount of traffic congestion. We added extra time to get around on the buses when we had a hike or a dinner to meet. I knew congestion was a summer event, but in November? And yet, at the ends of the day, and all day away from the roads, the quiet and wild park remains easily accessible.

Back at the hotel now. The theme of our afternoon walk was was change -- of climate, of pine mortality, of meadow restoration. The piles of removed brush and trees mark restoration of Ahwahnee Meadow. Out are several planted giant sequoias that were messing with the hydrology. The old, long-unused tennis courts finally came out too. That fine dogwood stays.
