2017 in the Garden
2017.
House and Garden.
This was the first full year for the new back yard. These pictures track the progression from an almost bare yard to one that was beginning to fill in and be showy. 2017 was a year to watch it grow and begin to learn its seasonal rhythms. The SW corner, the area by the Maple and later the Fountain Bed did especially well. The first year also saw re-do's of things that didn't quite work. The Rose Bed got most of that -- a round in Late Spring and another in Autumn -- but there were a few updates and patches elsewhere as well.
Something else happened in 2017. At a very visceral level, I reconnected with the garden after falling away for a few years. Even with all the joint planning, right after installation it was as much Four Dimensions' garden as mine. But all the observing, all the fretting, all the weeding, all the re-doing, all the photographing(!), changed that. I've made the new garden my own. Previous gallery. Next gallery.

8 May 2017. The Rose Bed is now at it's first bloom peak. Not a bad show from a distance, although a bit scraggly and rather limited in scope: mainly nasturtiums and roses, plus one very healthy columbine. You can see the lupines, but I was hoping for both more bloom and more sense of structure from them.
