Ventana: Lost Valley / Carrizo Trail Loop - April 2015
April 13-16, 2015. California Coast Range. A solo backpacking loop. Starting from Memorial Camp, I spent nights at Escondido, Lost Valley, and Cook Springs. Down via the Carrizo Trail. The Coast Ridge and Cook Springs sections of the route overlap with my April and May 2013 trips. The Lost Valley section overlaps with a 2019 trip.
This was a special trip for a variety of reasons. This loop almost duplicates one of my earliest trips to the Ventana Wilderness in May 1982. The only difference was that in 1982 I used the Arroyo Seco Trail, not the Carrizo Trail, to return to my car at Memorial Camp on the last day. That 1982 trip was my first solo backpacking excursion that was not an over-nighter. I returned to Lost Valley in April 1993 and that turned out to be the last trip of my "youthful" backpacking. I resumed regular backpacking in 2006, but this re-visit was slowed by the Basin/Indians fire and subsequent trail issues. Perhaps as cosmic consolation for the wait, I got a huge treat on the third day of this trip ...

I hiked from Memorial Campground to Escondido Campground on the Indians Road. It's open to traffic when dry but is still a quiet road. I met one van (a camper at Escondido) and two bicyclists. Nice mix of trees here: live oaks, big-leaf maples, a sycamore, and a Coulter pine in the distance. Other spots showed more damage from the 2008 fire.
