Tuesday, May 27. Heading out at about 3PM after driving up from Oakland today. The Papoose Lake distance is about right, but I logged about 18 to the near edge of Grizzly Meadow, with the lake a mile plus farther on.

Iris purdyi (Purdy's iris). This could be I. tenuissima but the strong color in the veining points more towards I. purdyi.

Penstemon anguineus (Siskiyou beardtongue).

Lonicera ciliosa (orange honeysuckle). I saw only a very few of these.

The North Fork of the Trinity River about 15 minutes before China Creek. There are Lewisias on that rocky bluff, but it was real hard to get close.

Camp tonight was on a flat above the North Fork of the Trinity River, maybe 1/4 mile north of the China Creek crossing.

Lewisia cotyledon (Siskiyou lewisia). After dinner, I walked back to the bluff where I had seen them on the way in. I worked my way down to the river where I could get a close look.

Lewisia cotyledon var. heckneri (Heckner's lewisia). The little teeth on the leaves confirm the variety. CNPS lists the variety (but not the species) in category 1B.2: rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere.

Wednesday, May 28. All packed up.

Continuing on the North Fork Trail. More exposures under Douglas firs today.

Penstemon deustus var. suffrutescens (hot rock beardtongue).

Silene campanulata (Red Mountain catchfly). This second Silene has flowers are a little squatter and larger than S. lemmonii.

Anemone deltoidea (Columbian windflower). First of a trio of whitish flowers I saw throughout the mid-elevations.

Clintonia uniflora (bride's bonnet, queen's cup).

Calochortus tolmiei (hairy star tulip). C. coeruleus or C. elegans are possible too, but the lack of cilia on the very tips of the petals and the petal shape suggest C. tolmiei. Jepson notes of C. coeruleus: "Intermediates to Calochortus tolmiei scattered but common in Northwestern California." On-line pictures do match C. tolmiei best.

Heuchera micrantha (Alum Root). On the Rattlesnake Creek Trail now.

Asarum hartwegii (Hartweg's wild ginger). No flowers today, but great leaves. Note the neighbors too: western star flower, lupines, a few grasses, etc.

Lots of mining activity on the Rattlesnake Creek Trail. I don't know whether these rock piles were constructed channels or are simply remnants from the hydaulic mining. What's clear is that this isn't natural geology.

On this drier slope, the trees are still mostly Douglas fir although there are some deciduous oaks in the mix. In front, a patch of Lupius croceus (Mt. Eddy lupine).

Lupinus croceus (Mt. Eddy lupine). Most pea family plants with racemes of yellow flowers are in the genus Thermopsis ... but not with these leaves.

Quercus kelloggii (California black oak). Oregon white oak is similar -- and there may be some on this trail -- but the telling feature for these is that the leaf points have little bristles.
