Bishop Pass and Muir Pass - September 2007
September 2 - 8, 2007. Sierra South. In at South Lake, over Bishop Pass into Dusy Basin and then down in the LeConte Canyon / Big Pete Meadow. A dayhike to Muir Pass. Then back the way I came. I covered the same ground (and more) during my 2010 North Lake to South Lake Trip. I was back in the area in 2012 and 2022 as well.
As noted in the Big Pines Gallery, 2006 marked my return to serious backpacking after many years. 2007 built on that. It was a big year for rebuilding my physical and psychological health. Not too many trips either year, but I was back out. During my backpacking hiatus, Muir Pass and the Muir Hut were high on the "to do" list should I ever get back to being able to go in that far. By the end of the summer 2007 a trip of that magnitude was within reach. This was my first trip to 12,000' since 1992. I was really, really grateful to have been able to get up there again.
This gallery obviously looks different than the others. In 2007 I was using older software -- Adobe Album (!) -- to create my galleries. I save them as pdfs. Rather than go back to the original jpegs, like I've done with other early galleries, here I've just converted those pdfs to jpegs, given them some extra sharpening, and posted them directly. Image quality may be down a bit, but I hope original format reinforces the sense of newness (or perhaps"re-newness") I felt in getting back into a world I had been absent from since early 1990's. Cleaner pictures can be found in some of the galleries associated with later visits to the area.
All the photos were taken with a Canon Powershot S70 and, when originally posted, had some minimal touchup (probably in Adobe Album).
